The findings show that care quality is directly linked to how many patients a diabetes specialist is responsible for.It measured quality using HbA1C control, blood pressure targets, and whether people got eye and kidney checks.

Preventive care suffers when specialist time is stretched too thin. Larger number of people living with diabetes equals worse over all care for all. The researchers call for urgent action to improve staffing.
Sector D (Best-Performing) showed noticeable difference in outcomes with lowest patient-to-specialist ratio (206:1). People with diabetes in this sector were most likely to:
- Reach A1C and blood pressure goals
- Receive annual eye exams
This sector sets the gold standard: enough staff = better outcomes
A shocking 2282 people per diabetes specialist in some regions. How can one doctor do it all?
Sector C and B (Middle-of-the-road) moderate ratios (~600–1300:1) some preventive care delivered, but inconsistency is likely in this sector. If pressure on specialists rises health outcomes begin to suffer as a result.
Sector A (Worst-Performing) extremely high patient load (2282:1) it demonstrated poor access to personalized car, large number of people missing HbA1C goals and increased risk of long-term complications.
It is inferred when one diabetes specialist is responsible for too many people, it leads to:
- Shorter appointments (or long waits)
- Delayed or missed screenings for eyes and kidneys.
- Less support with insulin adjustments and mental health.
- Poorer outcomes, even when you’re doing your best.
